Masahiro Hara and his team at Denso Wave (a Toyota subsidiary) invented QR codes in 1994 to solve a specific manufacturing problem: tracking automotive parts more efficiently than barcodes allowed. The standard barcode held only 20-30 characters. Hara's team needed to track entire assemblies with hundreds of part numbers across multiple languages.
Open Standard and Early Adoption
Denso Wave made the QR code standard freely available — a crucial decision that enabled broad adoption. ISO standardized QR codes in 2000. Early adoption was concentrated in Japan, where QR codes appeared on business cards and magazines throughout the early 2000s, read by dedicated scanner apps on feature phones.
The Smartphone Era
iPhone (2007) and Android (2008) smartphones could scan QR codes but required dedicated apps. The pivotal change came when Apple added native QR scanning to the iOS camera app in 2017, followed by Android. Suddenly 99% of smartphones could scan without any app download.
The COVID-19 Catalyst
The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 accelerated QR code adoption massively. Restaurants replaced physical menus with QR-code-linked digital menus overnight. Venue check-ins, vaccine certificates, contact tracing, and contactless payment all relied on QR codes. Consumer familiarity with scanning reached critical mass during this period.
